美国有家叫Mountain House的公司，专门做脱水应急食品。产品包括意大利面、牛肉、鸡肉、米饭、蔬菜……等等。
这种食品是专门为紧急情况准备的。厂家通过良好的干燥、灭菌、密封等手段，使保质期可以到二三十年。营养丰富，热水一冲就可以吃，而且口味很不错——当然，作为方便食品来说。不过好东西不便宜，你要是拿这个当饭吃，大概一顿需要10美元——零售价。
今年2月，Mountain House给很多订购用户发了封信：
Dear Valued Mountain House Customers:
We would like to provide you with an update on our #10 can situation. Demand for Mountain House #10 cans remains very high; therefore we are still unable to meet all #10 can production needs. Oregon Freeze Dry is allocating as much of our production capacity as possible to this market segment, while still allowing us to meet requirements in other markets. We’re only able to fill #10 can orders for our largest and most long-term dealers at this time. We’d be happy to provide you with a list of these dealers – please [email protected]or more information.
We expect this situation to remain until at least this summer. At this time, we are not able to predict an actual date as to when we will be selling #10 cans on Mountain House: Freeze Dried Food, Food Storage, Camping Food, Backpacking Food, Emergency Preparedness. or to our entire dealer network.
We would also like to share with you a recent company announcement to show that we are working on making improvements to be able to address these sudden increases in food storage demand. We’re making a major investment in expanding our production facility that will increase our production capacity. These modifications will start in May 2011 and we estimate the project to be completed by September 2011.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. OFD is working incredibly hard and fast to turn this situation around as quickly as possible. Again, we invite you to contact us for a list of dealers in your area that have #10 cans in stock.

“One of the nation's largest suppliers of dehydrated food has cut loose 99% of their dealers and distributors”这句话中提到的“全国最大的脱水食品供应商”显然就是Mountain House。而Mountain House突然停止了99%的零售，是因为他们接了一个大的政府合同，要优先满足这个需求。这需求是什么呢？
2月初，FEMA （the Federal Emergency Management Agency，联邦紧急事务管理局）网站放出了一个招标，要购买可供1400,0000人吃10天的应急食品。按一天三顿就是4,2000,0000份，按一天两顿也是2,8000,0000份。很简单就可以算出这个标是10亿美元数量级的。
美国政府现在显然并不很富裕，但忽然掏出这么多钱来买吃的，你猜是不是为了为了反恐？
更有趣的是，这份招标几天后突然从网站上消失了。然后Mountain House的用户就收到了那封信。
